Name Change Conversations FAQ
Come to open forum, get 25% bookstore discount
Don’t forget to come to the name change open forum this Thursday. Free 25-percent-off coupons from the UMR Bookstore will be given to the first 50 who arrive. As great as that deal is, you’ll feel even better knowing that you’ll leave the meeting with all the latest on what’s happening in the name change brand identity effort.
The forum will be held from 1:30-3 p.m. Thursday, June 21, in the Turner Room of Havener Center. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend to learn more about the project and the development of Missouri S&T’s brand identity. Team members will be on hand to discuss progress to date and upcoming steps.
Welcome two new team members
The UMR Brand Identity Team has expanded to include two new members: Wendy Berkelman, senior secretary of systems engineering, and Krista Chambers, senior secretary of engineering management. Both are involved in graduate student recruitment and were nominated by their chair, William Daughton. Welcome to Wendy and Krista.
Displays, banners, etc., to be ordered in bulk
To help coordinate the purchase of new display headers, green table runners and green standing banners, Shannon Stites in Enrollment Management will compile a list of departments needing to replace these items. These items will be ordered in bulk once the Missouri S&T logo and slogans have been determined (late summer/early fall time frame). If your department plans to order new display headers, table runners or standing banners to integrate the new campus brand identity into your marketing materials, please contact Shannon Stites at 341-4378 or by email at sstites AT umr DOT edu to get on the list. This will ensure that the university will receive a better price for the replacement of these items.
Brand Identity Team meetings: open to the campus
The Brand Identity Team meets at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays in the Silver and Gold Room of the Havener Center. The meetings are open to the campus community, and we encourage all interested students, faculty and staff to attend.
Fact sheet, sample letter available to departments
Attention, all academic departments, admissions ambassadors, coaches and others preparing to recruit new students: Download the name change fact sheet, print it out on departmental letterhead, and take it on the road to hand out to prospective students and their parents.
Go to http://namechange.mst.edu/2007/06/name_change_fact_sheet_for_dep.html to access the Microsoft Word document, or go directly to http://namechange.mst.edu/documents/name%20change%20fact%20sheet.doc.
While you’re in the downloading zone, be sure to download the sample letter (Microsoft Word document) we’ve prepared to let external customers, agencies and organizations know about the name change. Go to http://namechange.mst.edu/documents/sample%20letter.doc to download, then personalize the letter to meet your department’s needs.

Name Change Conversations FAQ
Stay up to date on the name change implementation by visiting the Name Change Conversations FAQ (frequently asked questions) at http://namechange.mst.edu/faq/ .

Why is the same content being repeatedly included in blog postings? We don't really need to see the same stuff that _isn't_ news in every new posting. That stuff would be perfect for an FAQ to be referenced at the bottom of each post, but not to have to page through on every article.
Good point, Nathan. I promise that this will be the last issue of the newsletter than will include repetition about items that can be downloaded for departmental use. At least, it will be the last issue for a while to include these things. We have to repeat these messages in order to get more members of the campus community on board. The old advertising axiom that "repetition brings results" holds true.
Also, we're posting the newsletters ver batim on the blog so that we have an online record.
Updating the FAQ is an excellent idea, and it's on my to-do list. I will incorporate some of the repeated items in the revised FAQ.
Thanks for the comment.
I thought the nickname of UMR was the "Miners", why is that being changed?
Roy - the term "Miners" refers to our sports teams. The "nickname," or shorthand version, of our official university name (the University of Missouri-Rolla), is UMR. After Jan. 1, the official university name will be Missouri University of Science and Technology, and the nickname will be Missouri S&T.
The term 'Miners' is proudly possessed by all of the 'UMR' graduates that I know and work with. It's not just the name of the sports teams. ("Oh, UMR has sports?")
With regards to this whole name change, I'm afraid someone forgot to close the 'common-sense' door, and a PR snake slithered onto campus. (Of course, Real Miners know how to handle snakes!)
A great university is built up from its core, not just by slapping a new sticker on the front door and printing new letterhead. It's going to take a VERY long time for those in industry, as well as potential students, to even recognize what Missouri S&T is. And once they do, their comment will likely be,"Oh, yeah. That used to be UMR/MSM down in Rolla. I wonder what happened to them? Oh well... OK, what other schools do I recognize on this list....", and proceed to look elsewhere.
I'm sure everything will be reported as 'rosey' after the change, but it certainly is a lot of money that could have been better spent in the labs and on research.
By the way, if this change was driven by UM-Columbia's desire for autonomy/ monopoly of 'Missouri', ('MU'/'Missouri University', "Mizzou"), then please remove the 'M' in MS&T and perhaps it will eliminate their confusion altogether. I would hate to see one of their prospective students confuse the two and actually enroll at Rolla.
UMR/MSM had a soul. After Jan. 1 2008, it'll just have a body with a toe-tag.
Thank you for the chance to comment.
