The Missouri S&T logo is here
After weeks of review, revision and gathering input from current and prospective students, alumni, faculty and staff, and others, the campus unveiled the logo (word mark) for Missouri University of Science and Technology. The new image, in the serif Berkeley font, conveys the university’s historic significance while presenting a bold, oversized “S&T.” Full story.
But … please don’t start using it yet
Although we’ve officially announced the logo, please don’t start using it yet. The Brand Identity Team is still working to define color usage and other guidelines. Soon we’ll have a graphic identity manual that describes just how to use the logo for stationery, business cards and other materials. Stay tuned.
The historic emblem and Joe Miner
While the new word mark is a departure from UMR’s current graphic identity, two other familiar symbols – the historic emblem and Joe Miner – will remain intact. But their usage will remain limited.
The historic emblem is being revised (as depicted here) to incorporate the new name. As our current graphic identity standards explain, the historic emblem “is not a ‘logo’ and should not be used as such.”
Joe Miner will remain unchanged.

With a profound sense of saddness, I have to say that the LOGO is not a positive impression. It is like placing a Mercedes hood ornament on a ford Pinto in an effort to claim it a a mercedes. UMR is KNOWN as a good enginering school! This name change has wasted time, effort and ULTIMATELY MONEY that coudl hve gone to further improve the school's reputation.
That was the best you could come up with? How much money was wasted on designing this thing? Talk about epic fail.
Ok, the name change has gone through, and the new logo has been unveiled--better than green block, not as good as the pick, hammer, chain, and gear. Bygones. My question is--will the UMR/MST football team continue to wear uniforms that look like Mizzou Hand-me-downs, or will they start wearing some silver or green with that gold?
Sandy - The athletic teams do plan to start wearing green and silver with the gold. The new look will begin with the winter sports after Jan. 1, so stay tuned. Thanks.
Your kidding me about the green silver and gold?? A perfectly good name has been messed up, then the LOGO is absolutly stupid, and now the colors of the football team, Please someone change the channel, I have seen enough of this flop!!
RG,
The school's colors have never been Black and Gold--that's always been Mizzou's. The UMR/MST colors are Silver and Gold, representing precious metals, with Green as an unofficial color because of St. Pats. The reason I asked here is because the sports teams' uniforms have to be replaced if they have UMR on them (I know some were replaced earlier, and just say Miners)--so would we be using UMR/MST colors, or MU colors?
Thanks for the info, Andrew. Maybe on a different topic, do you know if there is any discussion between UMR/MST athletics/administration and the South Dakota School of Mines and Tech, since "Joe Miner" and "Grubby" look so similar? Or was that part of the Joe Miner "upgrade"?
Holy cow... I'd say Joe Miner and "Grubby" are similar...

Grubby: http://www.sdsmt.edu/services/upr/newcolorgrubby.jpg
Who knows the history of those two mascots?
Sandy and Brian: Interesting questions and insights about the similarities between Joe Miner and "Grubby." I don't know a lot about which came first, and this isn't the right forum for that discussion. But if anyone reading this knows anything definitive about this topic, please email me and I'll share the info with Sandy and Brian. My job as moderator is to ensure we keep the blog comments on-topic. Thanks.
